The Edusense Wellbeing Package
Prioritising Wellbeing: The School's Role
This package has been designed to support you in protecting, promoting and enhancing wellbeing among your staff. It equips your teachers to prioritise their own mental health and wellbeing, and gives leaders the means to support the wellbeing of those they oversee. The potential implications for staff retention, recruitment and pupil outcomes are self-evident.
'A sense of how you are doing'
The DfE Education Staff Wellbeing Charter (2021) gives a working definition of wellbeing as: ‘a sense of how we are doing’. Yet, research from Education Support (2021) reveals a disconcerting reality – the majority of schools remain uncertain about their own staff's wellbeing status.
Due to a lack of surveying, the ‘’norm’ is rarely placed under scrutiny and too often symptoms are not flagged until it’s too late.
The Process of Rebalancing
Functionally Fluency
Do you tend to act impulsively, or does excessive thinking lead to indecisiveness? The internal use of energy plays a key role in the behaviour patterns staff habitually adopt.
TIFF will develop the art and skill of interpersonal effectiveness. It will help you to reduce stress by rebalancing your energy output; use your authority so that everyone benefits; and to care without becoming worn out.
If you've been signed off, this provision is available prior to returning to school.
On-going Provision: A Sense of Balance & Agency
Chalkface Check-Up
Edusense provides a safe space for individuals to routinely check-in, giving them permission to prioritise self-care and nip things in the bud. The Chalkface Check-Up Self-Reflective Tool derives from my doctoral research. First and foremost, it serves as an efficient and effective mechanism for teachers to process the intricacies of their day.
The tool allows emotions, unresolved thoughts and uncomfortable memories to pass through a cognitive filter. This creates a healthy boundary and a sense of agency. I invite you to take a moment to bring to mind colleagues who might benefit.
*An evaluative tool to collate evidence of impact of CFCU over time, is also provided.
Recommended
Chalkface can be used flexibly to meet individual needs, for example, your colleague might use Chalkface once a week for the first half term after they return, and then, perhaps, once every half-term to keep an eye on their sense of wellbeing.
Furthermore, in alignment with Education Support's primary objective (2021, p.7), we’ve carefully package this support in a digestible format so that people can access it in their own time and on any smart device. A Chalkface Check-Up reflection takes approximately 30 - 40 minutes. The tool allows the user to pause and resume as required. For your convenience, the audio option, automatically transcribes spoken responses into text.
Professional Conversations
This semi-structured tool provides a mechanism to examine ongoing issues and challenges. For example, aspects emerging from the Chalkface Check-Up reflection may require further exploration with a trusted colleague. This essential exercise is illustrative of social agency.
One of the first casualties of stress, is the capacity to think straight when under pressure - especially when faced with dilemmas. This tool is a coherent and comprehensive guide to decision-making. A wide range of cues prompt you to thoughtfully consider your options and clarify your thinking when faced with difficult choices.
Resilient Leaders
This tool serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides the Wellbeing Lead with a means to gain an holistic appreciation of their role; secondly, a free, interactive introduction can be used to sense check how their returning colleague is doing.
